HDR, What’s what?
By Flanegan
Whats the purpose of HDR image after the invasion of Digital Era? (sucks! i want polaroid and shoot medium format in film)
Behind the story of HDR actually is not for the photographer. It was meant to create it for cinematographer shooting an landscape and you can see the whole detail (dark to bright 0 – 255).
Lots of HDR Photos you saw on flickr are actually is not HDR lar. Only a few meaning HDR photo you can found on the flickr that people never tag the HDR name and also there’s no comment on the photo.
If you see a photo with an HDR name or tag, and lots of people leave a comment and awards.. Trust me, it’s not really HDR but they using HDR software to make it but lots of editting error such as chromatic abberation, detail lost become dark noise, over saturated and also they didnt fix the ghostly effect on the picture.
Well.. I’m not good at this HDR also lar. I don’t really like it because i have to bring out my light meter and check the E.Vs lar and see the detail and make sure the lighting won’t change ever seconds lar. Payah bah!
For those who like HDR, lemme show you the differences between Photoshop merge HDR, Photomatix merge HDR and also D.I.Y HDR (you photoshop yourself using layer.)
Since it’s a digital age and people take the advantage never use the ‘long’ way and understand the meaning of HDR, this time i’m so rajin to see the compare..
Here’s the image of 3 way for you to do HDR :

Left to right. Click image for larger version and great details.
The left photo is Photoshop merge HDR.. Not that fancy pansy or artsy fartsy but in real life. This is what you see with your both eyes of exact exposure.
The Middle one pulak, very o-famous Photomatix software specialize in HDR merge. Shoot 2 different exposure and 1 exact exposure from your camera and then it will automatic merge and detect the color tone, exposure, the brightness and darkness layer then it will erase the detail that they don’t want and combine the right color and detail for a few seconds or minute you’ll get the result. After that, you have to minor fix the image before you process and save it to jpg or tiff file. It looks so dramatic and the color got a lil bit saturated and you have to desaturared it on photoshop or any other software to get the right one. Everyone loves this software because it’s reliable and fast. But when it comes to work, imagine if the client say he/she wants to see the detail of the building. Nah~~ panic kau sana.
On the right side is i took 2 photos. 1 under expose and 1 over expose ( 4 stops – 4e.v) and then slowly get the detail back one by one using layer, channel and all the stuff on photoshop lar. I manage to bring back the detail of the building.
Which one is better?
For me, I prefer do it myself… Photoshop Merge HDR is obviously not the best lar but Photomatix does a really great job on HDR merge. Come on guys don’t download it on torrent and get the original one (only cost about USD100+ i think) if you are a HDR Photo enthusiast and decide to sell it.
Bah that’s all about my crappy HDR talk…
